dragon book has the bare essentials and is an OK primer. It's not my area but I'd say if you can handle lexx and yacc then you've got that under control.Дў. The dragon book covers the basics of most of them, but like you said it deals with imperative (and primitive by modern standards) langauges.ДЎ. (I'm looking in your direction, newton_meter). An ideal balance would be a high-level survey of major functions, algorithms, and components of compilers without too much code or pseudocode. So, given these ruminations, does anyone have any good suggestions for a single text to serve as a sort of touchstone for me? I don't want to fall into the trap of totally reimplementing someone else's design (that's why I've settled on a book rather than looking at code), but I also don't want to become hopelessly lost. I'm also wary of how using a functional language to implement the compiler will affect my ability to get things done - most algorithms and systems programming texts come from an imperative point of view. I'd probably be using lex and yacc to generate the first stages of the compiler, and I'd probably want to compile to some P-code of my own design at first, to avoid dealing with the unpleasantness of real-life CPUs until I have something working. However, I'd like to have a decent text to make me more aware of pitfalls and design tradeoffs inherent in implementations, rather than me just blithely cobbling something together. What I'm currently thinking of is a functional-language implementation of an interpreter and/or compiler for C or a significant subset of C. In one class we implemented a very barebones interpreter, and I'd like to take this to a deeper level. Unfortunately, my school's curriculum kind of shafted me as far as those kinds of things go, so I have to pick up a lot of stuff autodidactically, after the fact. My big interests are AI (the more symbolic type, not neural networks/computer vision/etc.), programming languages (particularly functional), and compilers.
